Dragages handed over Hang Hau Station and tunnels to MTRC 10 weeks ahead of schedule
20 August 2002

With the Tseung Kwan O Extension inaugurated on Aug 19, Hang Hau Station (project MTRC601) is now in full operation. Dragages is proud to be the main contractor of the Hang Hau Station and the associated tunnels, one of the most challenging jobs along the TKO Extension.

Hang Hau Station is located at the heart of Tseung Kwan O new town area, an expanding residential area which can accommodate up to 580,000 people by 2005. The station, including the Property Enabling Works (PEW), is surrounded by many private and public residential buildings; as well as communal facilities. One end of the concourse area is connected to a residential building by a covered pedestrian link.

The construction of Hang Hau station is considered as one of the most difficult jobs along the Tseung Kwan O Extension, due to its proximity to the community. During construction, Dragages proposed an alternative top-down construction method to build the station, and has observed all necessary environmental measures, thus minimizing nuisance to the neighborhood.

On this project, a proactive “Partnering” approach has been successfully applied. One of the many benefits of the approach led to over 90% of the alternatives accepted, and thus an early completion of the station and tunnels: Dragages handed over the works 10 weeks ahead of schedule.

A Contractor Safety Award was also presented by MTRC to Dragages for the Hang Hau Station project in recognition of the safety efforts devoted by the project team in the project.

Works on the Station, PEW and its 1.2 km associated tunnels commenced in April 1999, and were handed over to the MTRC end of June, 2002; contributing to the early inauguration.

In Tseung Kwan O new town, Dragages has previously completed five schools (1999) for the Architectural Services Department, as well as a public housing estate “Choi Ming Court” (2001) comprising 1920 apartments for the Hong Kong Housing Authority.
